Washington DC [US], July 16: Darline Graham Nordone, the younger sister of late US senator Lindsey Graham, was sworn in on Tuesday to fill his Senate seat representing the state of South Carolina.
Graham Nordone has not previously held elected office and little is publicly known about her political views, according to the Washington Post.
Under South Carolina law, the governor appoints a replacement when a US senator dies in office. Graham Nordone will serve until her brother's term ends in January 2027.
Voters will elect a senator for the next full term in the November 3 midterm elections. Lindsey Graham had been expected to seek re-election as the Republican candidate before his death.
