US Congress ratifies Trump's victory

Jan 07, 2025

New York [US], January 7: As President of the US Senate, US Vice President Kamala Harris, who lost to Mr. Trump in that election, also presided over the electoral vote count in the US House of Representatives, thereby certifying the election results, according to USA Today.
The vote counting and certification took place quickly, within about 30 minutes, and without any objections. Republicans cheered when Harris announced that Trump had 312 electoral votes. Democrats cheered when Harris's tally was announced at 226.
The January 6 vote count was a formality to certify the victory, but exactly four years ago, the vote count was disrupted by Mr. Trump and his supporters who refused to accept his defeat to Mr. Joe Biden.
At that time, protesters stormed the capitol building, leading to deadly clashes. "We must never forget. Democracy is sacred and deeply rooted, but it can also be fragile at times," said Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer.
"Today, I did what I have done throughout my career, solemnly swore that I have repeatedly supported and defended the United States Constitution. Today, I fulfilled my constitutional duty to ensure that the votes of the American people, the American voters, will be counted," Ms. Harris said, affirming the "peaceful transfer of power".
Before the vote count, Mr. Trump wrote on social media that this was a "historic moment" and called for "making America great again." President-elect Trump will officially take office on January 20.
