Dec 09, 2024

New York [US], December 9: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has emphasised the need for international support to ensure that any political transition in Syria is inclusive and meets the legitimate aspirations of its people in all their diversity.
He also underlined the importance of restoring Syria's sovereignty, unity, independence, and territorial integrity.
In an official statement issued today, Guterres affirmed that Syria's future must be decided by Syrians, highlighting that his Special Envoy, Geir Otto Pedersen, will work with them to achieve this goal in the coming phase.
The Secretary-General noted the significant work required to ensure an orderly political transition leading to renewed institutions. He reiterated his call for calm and the avoidance of violence during this critical time, emphasising a commitment to protecting the rights of all Syrians without discrimination.
The statement stressed the need to respect the inviolability of diplomatic and consular premises and personnel in all circumstances, in line with international law.
Guterres pledged that the United Nations will "honour the memory of those who have borne the brunt of the Syrian conflict," reaffirming the organisation's commitment to supporting Syrians in building a nation where "reconciliation, justice, freedom, and prosperity are shared realities for all."
He concluded his statement by saying, "This is the path to sustainable peace in Syria."
