UN reports 64 casualties from unexploded ordnance in Afghanistan

Islamabad [Pakistan], January 28: Sixty-four people, including 47 children, were killed or injured by explosive remnants of war in Afghanistan between October and December, according to the UN's latest quarterly human rights update released on Monday.
The report highlights the continued danger posed by explosive remnants, with Afghan children being the most frequent victims.
On Monday, local media reported an explosion in Afghanistan's eastern Paktia province that killed an 8-year-old child and injured five others. The incident occurred in the Zazai Aryub district when the children struck a mortar shell, left over from decades of conflict, with a stone. Three of the injured children are in critical condition.
In a similar incident in October 2024, an unexploded ordnance detonated and killed three children as they were harvesting potatoes and accidentally hit the device with a shovel. (DPA)
