Ukraine slams anti-Putin Russian news outlet for abuse of war images

Feb 04, 2025

Kiev [Ukraine], February 4: Anti-Putin news website Meduza has halted an international advertising campaign using unauthorized images of Ukrainians following criticism from Ukraine.
Meduza, which puts out material in Russian and English, said it regretted its mistake following anger in Ukraine at a photo taken of a Lviv father after his wife and three daughters died in a Russian missile attack on the western Ukrainian city in September last year. Meduza, which is based in Riga, said it was halting its advertising campaign. The man told the Kyiv Independent news website that use of the image had not been agreed with him and was totally unacceptable.
The Foreign Ministry in Kiev said Meduza should receive a "special 'prize' for marketing cynicism and hypocrisy." "They used images of Ukrainians who lost families and homes in a promo ad for the Russian outlet Meduza. Exploiting our tragedy to evoke sympathy for Russians is a complete disgrace," it posted on X. Meduza, which calls Russia's war against Ukraine a "criminal and violent invasion" and said it regretted using the image without permission. (DPA)
