Türkiye to tackle water shortage in Bursa by building new dams

Jun 28, 2023

Istanbul [Turkey], June 28: Türkiye is trying to solve the critical water shortage in the northwestern province of Bursa with new dam projects, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported on Tuesday.
The authorities expect to tackle the water shortage by 2060 by building two new dams within two to three years, said the report.
The new dams are expected to provide 209 million cubic meters of drinking water and service water per year, up from the current 185 million cubic meters, it added.
With a population of over 3 million, Bursa, known for its industrial production, has long been struggling against a severe drought caused by insufficient rainfall.
Türkiye's major cities, including Istanbul, were hit by severe drought due to the lack of rain last year.
Data issued by the Istanbul Water and Sewerage Administration last week showed that the dam filling rate stood at 44.49 percent, below the seasonal normals of approximately 70 percent.
