Trump to call Putin after meeting European leaders

Aug 19, 2025

Washington DC [US], August 19: US President Donald Trump on Monday said he will call Russian President Vladimir Putin after his meeting with Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky and European allies in the White House.
Zelensky and Trump answered questions from journalists in the Oval Office before closed-door discussions on ending the war in Ukraine.
Trump dodged questions about details on US peacekeeping troops and security guarantees for Ukraine, but promised: "We will give them very good protection, very good security."
Referring to Putin, Trump said the two leaders are "going to have a phone call right after these meetings today" and could have a trilateral meeting with Zelensky.
"We may or may not have a trilat. If we don't have a trilat, then the fighting continues," said the US president. Trump and Zelensky earlier shook hands and smiled for cameras as the Ukrainian arrived at the White House. A meeting with European leaders - including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, France's Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Finnish President Alexander Stubb and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte - was planned later on.
