Trump says he will try to reclaim land for Ukraine

Aug 12, 2025

Washington [US], August 12: US President Donald Trump says he will try to reclaim key territories for Ukraine at an upcoming meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
At a White House press conference on August 11, President Donald Trump said he would try to regain territory for Ukraine and create the basis for an agreement to end the conflict between Kyiv and Moscow.
According to NBC News, the leader said that Russia has taken control of a large part of Ukraine 's territory , including some "very important" areas. "We're going to try and take some of that territory back to Ukraine," Trump said.
President Trump will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska (USA) on August 15. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is unlikely to attend the event.
Mr Trump said the Ukrainian leader would not be part of the upcoming summit. He also said Mr Zelensky had attended many meetings over the more than three-year conflict but had produced few results.
The US president described his August 15 meeting with Mr Putin as an "exploratory meeting" and that he would know immediately whether progress had been made.
"At the end of the meeting, probably in two minutes, I will know exactly whether there is a deal or not," Mr. Trump said, adding that he would inform European leaders immediately afterwards.
The US president predicted that the meeting could be good or bad, and then all he could say would be "good luck, keep fighting", or "we can make a deal".
If all goes well, the leaders of Russia and Ukraine will meet later, and Mr Trump may or may not attend. The White House owner wants a ceasefire and a deal that is best for both sides. "There may be some land exchange," Mr Trump said.
Previously, President Zelensky announced that he would not accept handing over land to Russia because the territorial issue had been fixed in the constitution.
European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Policy Kaja Kallas said on August 11 that transatlantic solidarity is needed to support Ukraine and put pressure on Russia to end the war.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke by phone with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the same day, welcoming diplomatic efforts to bring peace and agreeing that peace must be built with Ukraine, not imposed on them.
