Trump says Colombian president to visit U.S. in February

Jan 10, 2026

Washington DC [US], January 10: U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday he looks forward to having a meeting with Colombian President Gustavo Petro in the White House during the first week of February to address topics including drug trafficking.
"I am sure it will work out very well for Colombia, and the U.S.A.," Trump said of the planned meeting on Truth Social, adding that "cocaine and other drugs must be STOPPED from coming into the United States."
Earlier this week, Trump said that Petro called him by phone "to explain the situation of drugs and other disagreements" and that he "appreciated his (Petro's) call and tone" during the phone conversation.
The phone call came after Trump threatened Petro, claiming a U.S. military strike against Colombia "sounds good" to him.
On Sunday, Trump told reporters on Air Force One that Colombia, which borders Venezuela, is "run by a sick man, who likes making cocaine and selling it to the United States, and he (Petro)'s not going to be doing it very long."
Petro condemned the U.S. strike that occurred on Jan. 3 to seize Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, and has also accused the U.S. government of "murder" for killing suspected drug traffickers at sea.
