Top EU diplomat is counting on continued US aid to Ukraine

Oct 02, 2023

Kyiv [Ukraine], October 2: EU foreign policy chief JosepBorrell is counting on the United States to continue security assistance to Ukraine, despite aid for the country being stripped from a short-term government funding bill amid Republican Party infighting.
"We believe this will not be the last word," Borrell said while on a visit to Kiev on Sunday. "I have the hope that this will not be the definite decision and that the United States will continue to support Ukraine." The deeply polarized US Congress averted a government shutdown going into effect on Sunday by passing a last-minute bill to keep federal funding flowing for the next 45 days.
But in order to get the stopgap measure through Congress, additional aid for Ukraine was dropped. Far-right Republicans in particular have increasingly voiced resistance to allocating more money for Ukraine.
Borrell said he spoke with Ukraine's new defence minister RustemUmerov about the priorities of the EU and its members in military aid and training. (DPA)
