Thailand arrests police officer who is the wife of the leader of the triads

Bangkok [Thailand], December 25: Thai police have arrested female police colonel WanthanareeKornchayanant, wife of triad leader Chaiyanat Kornchayanant, and six other people in Bangkok on charges of being involved in a drug smuggling ring .
Investigators from the Metropolitan Traffic Police Department (MPB) searched an apartment in Bangkok on the afternoon of December 24 to arrest Colonel Wanthanaree, according to a warrant issued by the Bangkok Southern Criminal Court, the Bangkok Post reported.
The female officer is in the external affairs department of the Royal Thai Police and is the granddaughter of police general PrachaPromnok, a former national police chief and former deputy prime minister under former Prime Minister Yingluck Sinawatra.
Ms. Wanthanaree and six other suspects were questioned at MPB headquarters and the press was banned from the area.
Previously, the leader Chaiyanat, nicknamed Tuhao, of the triad was arrested on November 23, after surrendering to deputy national police chief SurachateHakparn. This subject was arrested under a wanted warrant on charges of drug trafficking and illegal possession of psychotropic substances with intent to sell.
Chaiyanat denied all charges, but the court refused to grant bail. Before Chaiyanat surrendered, police searched two locations in Bangkok, including a 200 million baht mansion on Rama V Road and a luxury hotel in central Bangkok, believed to be where this subject used to stay.
However, the police did not find the leader of the triad, but only his wife. The functional forces have frozen Chaiyanat's assets worth about 3 billion baht (VND 2,037 billion), including a luxury resort and many cars.
