Russia says over 90 pct of fuel oil collected after 2024 spill in Kerch Strait

Dec 13, 2025

Moscow [Russia], December 13: More than 90 percent of the fuel oil spilled in an incident in the Kerch Strait in late 2024 has been collected, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Savelyev said Friday.
After two Russian oil tankers sank in the Kerch Strait on Dec. 15 last year, more than 185,000 tonnes of contaminated sand and soil have been collected for subsequent disposal and sale, Savelyev said.
According to the deputy prime minister, fuel oil was pumped out of the stranded stern of one of the oil tankers in March, while the bulk of fuel oil was removed from the bow of the tanker in October and November.
He noted that the government has approved the installation of three cofferdams to contain leaks from the sunken tankers. The first has been put in place, while work on the second and third continues, he said.
