Renewed bomb threats towards German schools, institutions

Oct 25, 2023

Leipzig [Germany], October 25: Several German schools and large institutions, including Berlin's central station, reported bomb threats on Tuesday, following similar threats targeting schools and a media organization on Monday.
In most cases, the all-clear was given after an assessment by local authorities.
In Berlin, threats were reported towards the central station on Tuesday, as well as at several embassies, the RTL television station and Willy Brandt House, the headquarters of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) of Chancellor Olaf Scholz, police said.
A broadcasting centre housing three radio stations in the state of Thuringia as well as schools in several German states also reported threats on Tuesday. The schools were evacuated.
It is unclear who is behind the attacks, what the motivation is and whether there is a connection between the incidents.
According to the police, the threats were received by email. In some cases, the messages made references to the Islamist Hamas as well as the war in Gaza, while one letter made a reference to the Ukraine conflict.
It is possible that the aim is to weaken the population's sense of security and to stir up discontent against Israel, security sources told dpa on Tuesday.
On Monday, threats against several schools triggered major police operations nationwide. Schools in the states of Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, North Rhine Westphalia, Saxony and Thuringia were affected.
The headquarters of public broadcaster ZDF in the western city of Mainz were also evacuated briefly because of a bomb threat. Nothing suspicious was found and police gave the all-clear on Monday.
