Copenhagen [Denmark], January 16: The president of the Danish parliament, Søren Gade, greeted the country's new head of state with "Long live His Majesty King Frederik X" when the king presented himself on Monday, a day after his coronation.
The assembled Folketinget responded unanimously with "Hurrah!" repeated nine times.
Danish radio's girls' choir then sang for the royal family. Queen Mary, Crown Prince Christian, former queen Margrethe II, who abdicated in favour of her son, her sister Princess Benedikte and Frederik's brother, Prinz Joachim, were all present. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen read out a statement on behalf of the new king, in which he and his queen said they would do all in their power to serve the kingdom. Danish tradition allows only members of parliament to address the Folketinget.
In the statement, Frederik expressed the hope that his service would benefit the country and gain the confidence of the people. The prime ministers of the autonomous Danish territories of Greenland and the Faroe Islands were present in parliament.
