Mrs. Takaichi takes one step into history
Oct 20, 2025
Tokyo [Japan], October 20: Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) President Sanae Takaichi has moved closer to becoming prime minister of the island nation after winning the support of the Japan Progressive Party ( JIP ).
Together, these two parties have 231 of the 465 seats in the lower house, which means they are only two votes short of the minimum majority of 233 seats needed. Because the two parties are in an alliance but still do not have a majority in the lower house, it is very likely that the Japanese prime minister election scheduled to take place in the next few days will be decided in the second round between the two candidates who won the most votes in the first round. At that time, Ms. Takaichi 's chance of being elected is considered almost certain.
So it can be said that Ms. Takaichi has turned the situation around very dramatically, after the ruling coalition between LDP and Komeito Party fell apart. The support of JIP has actually helped Ms. Takaichi step one foot into the history of political power of the Land of the Rising Sun by making the island nation have the first female prime minister.
With the support of JIP, Ms. Takaichi can take power, but this ruling coalition is still only a minority ruling coalition. Compared to her predecessors, Ms. Takaichi's starting point in governing Japan is not favorable, so the difficulties and challenges will not only be more numerous but also more difficult to overcome.
In order to successfully govern and create the most favorable political, social and economic changes in Japan for the LDP and the ruling coalition in the upcoming parliamentary election, Ms. Takaichi must simultaneously build and strengthen unity within the LDP, maintain the alliance with JIP and win over other small parties in the Japanese parliament .
