Leader of Spain's Valencia region steps down one year after major floods

Nov 04, 2025

Madrid [Spain], November 4: Just over a year after deadly storms and flooding in the Spanish city of Valencia, regional president Carlos Mazon announced his resignation on Monday.
"I can't take any more," said the politician from the conservative People's Party (PP) at a specially convened press conference, referring to the criticism aimed at him since the disaster.
More than 220 people lost their lives in the floods which began in late October 2024.
The regional government was heavily criticized because warnings were issued too late via mobile phones and evacuations were organized too slowly. Mazon himself could not be reached for hours at the beginning of the storm.
Tens of thousands have repeatedly taken to the streets to demand his resignation.
"I know that I made mistakes, I admit it - and I will have to live with it for the rest of my life," said Mazon.
Observers in the media have however judged his apologies to be half-hearted, even as he also blamed others. (DPA)
