Dec 14, 2025

Pyongyang [North Korea], December 14: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has welcomed back soldiers deployed to Russia to support troops in the war in Ukraine with a lavish ceremony, state news agency KCNA reported on Saturday.
In the ceremony, which took place on Friday, Kim praised the "heroic" conduct of an engineering unit during their 120-day mission abroad, KCNA reported.
Photos published by KCNA showed Kim laying a white flower at a memorial wall bearing pictures of fallen soldiers. During the ceremony, Kim acknowledged that nine soldiers from the unit had died. According to KCNA, the unit was sent to Russia at the beginning of August to support Russian troops in recapturing parts of the border region of Kursk. Moscow and Pyongyang signed a strategic partnership in 2024 during Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to North Korea. The agreement includes military assistance should one of the two countries be attacked. (DPA)
