Iran grants Iraqi tankers safe Hormuz passage

Aug 23, 2026

Tehran [Iran], August 23: Iran is granting several oil tankers from neighbouring Iraq passage through the Strait of Hormuz, the state news agency IRNA reported.
The granting of a special permit is said to stem from demands made by the Iraqi leadership during Iranian Parliamentary Speaker Mohammed Baghar Ghalibaf's visit to Baghdad.
Iraqi President Nisar Amedi said he told Ghalibaf that Iraq had suffered major financial losses and that the Iraqi government would be unable to pay civil servants' salaries while the Strait of Hormuz remained closed to Iraqi oil exports.
The report did not specify how many tankers from Iraq have passed through the strategically important strait so far, nor whether the special permit applies permanently. (DPA)
