Haaland buys Norway's most expensive book - then gives it away to library

Oslo [Norway], March 25: Norwegian football star Erling Haaland, 25, has bought the most expensive book in his country's history. Together with his father Alf-Inge, he bought a 1594 edition of Snorri Sturluson's Kings' Sagas for 1.3 million Norwegian kroner ($134,000) in December, according to the NTB news agency. But he did not intend to keep it. "I was never a big reader," Haaland said in a statement from his home municipality of Time on Tuesday.
He has now handed the book over to the municipality permanently - more specifically to the library in the town of Bryne, where Haaland grew up. However, the Manchester City striker set one condition. "I want the book to always be displayed open so that people can read about those who come from my home, from Bryne and Jaeren," the municipality quoted Haaland as saying.
The book is to be linked to a reading competition at schools in the municipality in the coming school year. The prize will be a visit to Oslo's Ullevaal stadium for a match featuring Haaland and the Norway team. (DPA)
