Germany marks first national veterans' day

Jun 16, 2025

Berlin [Germany], June 16: Germany on Sunday marked its first-ever National Veterans' Day, as top political leaders called for appreciation and respect for the country's armed forces.
The observance, established through a parliamentary resolution passed last year, aims to show recognition, respect, and appreciation for Bundeswehr soldiers, Germany's federal armed forces.
According to a statement by the Bundestag, Germany's lower house of parliament, the introduction of the day also aims to strengthen the connection between the military and German society.
Speaking at a ceremony in Berlin, Bundestag President Julia Kloeckner stressed that the Bundeswehr is a "parliamentary army," adding that because of this, parliamentary members bear a special responsibility.
She also acknowledged the challenging and often stressful nature of military service, underscoring the need for adequate support for service members.
"The Bundeswehr is an integral part of our society," German Chancellor Friedrich Merz wrote on social media platform X, stating that those who serve or have served in the military deserve public appreciation, recognition, and respect.
Historically, the celebration of war veterans in Germany was discontinued following the defeat of Nazi Germany in the Second World War.
