Former Afghan president urges Taliban to reopen schools for girls

Mar 17, 2025

Islamabad [Pakistan], March 17: Former Afghan president Hamid Karzai has once again called on the Taliban government to reopen schools and universities to Afghan girls as the new school year approaches.
In a statement released on Sunday, Karzai noted that it has been three years since Afghan girls were barred from attending school.
"Education is not just a right; it is an essential foundation for the prosperity, dignity, and survival of our country and its people," the former president said.
Karzai warned that the ongoing denial of education to girls is hindering Afghanistan's development and forcing many young people and families to seek opportunities abroad.
Since the Taliban's return to power in 2021, Afghan girls have been banned from studying beyond primary school. This decision, initially referred to by the Taliban as a "temporary suspension," has not been reversed. Afghan women are also required to have a male guardian when travelling long distances and are excluded from most government jobs. (DPA)
