Finland releases shadow fleet tanker suspected of damaging cables

Mar 03, 2025

Copenhagen [Denmark], March 3: A tanker suspected of having damaged cables in the Baltic Sea has been allowed to leave Finnish waters under border guard control, Finnish police said on Sunday.
There is no reason to keep the "Eagle S" from leaving Finnish waters, the police said, as criminal investigations have reached an advanced stage.
However, three crew members are still banned from travelling, with investigations expected to be concluded by the end of April.
The "Eagle S" is linked to damage to the undersea power cable Estlink 2, which runs between Finland and Estonia, as well as several communication cables.
The incident occurred on December 25 last year. Finnish authorities confiscated the ship as it had passed the area around the time of the damage.
The ship sails under the flag of the Cook Islands and, according to the EU, belongs to Russia's shadow fleet. (DPA)
