Ex-Chilean president Bachelet withdraws bid to be UN chief

Buenos Aires [Argentina], September 21: Chile's former president Michelle Bachelet has withdrawn her bid to succeed UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, she said on Saturday.
"Some may believe that this was not the right time for the kind of candidacy I sought to represent," she said on Instagram.
"I do not regret having undertaken this great challenge. We helped place on the global agenda the conviction that the next Secretary-General should be a woman from Latin America."
The office traditionally rotates between the world regions, with Latin America next in line. To date, the United Nations has never been led by a woman. Bachelet, who was president of Chile from 2006-10 and from 2014-18 and then headed the UN Human Rights Commission for four years, said she would continue her international work.
