EU states urge peaceful transition in Syria, say no contact with oppn fighters

Brussels [Belgium], December 10: The European Union's 27 member states called for an "orderly, peaceful and inclusive transition"after the end of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad's regime, but Brussels has yet to reach out to the opposition that toppled him.
"All must have an opportunity to reunify, stabilise and rebuild their country, restore justice and ensure accountability," the statement from top EUdiplomat Kaja Kallas on behalf of the said on Monday.
The 27 EU countries underlined the importance of preserving the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Syria during the transition and to "reject all forms of extremism." The EUurged all actors to avoid further violence, ensure the protection of civilians, minorities and cultural and religious monuments and uphold international humanitarian law. (DPA)
