Diarrhoea-causing parasite expands to 34 US states with thousands ill

Washington DC [US], July 16: A parasite that causes severe diarrhoea has now infected thousands of people across 34 US states, a federal health authority said.
More than 1,600 confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis have been recorded, while a further 5,100 suspected cases are under investigation, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in Washington late Tuesday.
Because the illness often goes undiagnosed or unreported, the true number of infections is likely to be significantly higher.
The agency is investigating whether fast-food chain Taco Bell may have played a role in the outbreak, the Washington Post reported.
