Deputy police chief's son shoots at university

Apr 19, 2025

New York [US], April 19: On the afternoon of April 17 (local time), a serious shooting occurred at Florida State University (FSU-USA), killing at least 2 people and injuring 6 others. The subject was shot down by the police and arrested on the spot. The suspect was identified as Phoenix Ikner, 20, an FSU student and the son of a deputy police chief in the area, according to AFP news agency.
Authorities found 3 guns at the scene. Among them were a gun found on the suspect, one in a nearby car and a shotgun in the student lounge. According to preliminary investigations, the perpetrator used a handgun that had been his mother's official weapon - now Leon County deputy sheriff. After leaving the force, she bought the gun and owned it as a personal property.
Commenting on the incident, US President Donald Trump called the shooting at FSU "an embarrassment", but stressed that he would not seek to change the nation's gun laws. Meanwhile, FBI Director Kash Patel said in a post on social media that "we will provide full support to local law enforcement if necessary."
The incident at FSU has once again raised concerns about security and gun control in the United States, where mass shootings on school campuses have become almost commonplace in recent years.
