Death toll rises to 48 after motorway collapse in southern China

May 03, 2024

Shenzhen [China], May 3: Shenzhen: The death toll has risen to 48 following the collapse of a carriageway on a motorway in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong, state news agency Xinhua reported on Thursday.
The collapse of a 18-metre section of road near the city of Meizhou on the Meizhou-Dabu Expressway occurred after several days of heavy rain in the area.
It is possible that the heavy rainfall of the past few days had washed out the road, though the cause of the accident remains unclear. "Complex conditions" were cited at the scene of the accident during a press conference held by the local authorities on Thursday and broadcast online.
Many vehicles were buried under large masses of earth, the authorities said. Cars were also burnt out.
