Cyprus activates alert system for population to find bunkers

Jun 16, 2025

Athens [Greece], June 16: The authorities on Cyprus have activated an early-warning app for providing information to the population on the closest bunker in the event of an emergency, as Israel and Iran trade strikes.
The SafeCY app also provides guidelines and useful information on how to seek shelter in the event of an attack. Cyprus has around 2,200 safe rooms and bunkers, according to the Interior Ministry of the European Union country closest to the conflict.
A key reason for concern is that the United Kingdom maintains two bases on the island that could become targets for an Iranian attack. The most important is at Akrotiri to the west of the port city of Limassol, which lies 275 kilometres north-west of the Israeli port of Haifa.
