Brazil's Bolsonaro to return to prison after court rejects house arrest bid

Jan 03, 2026

Brasilia [Brazil], January 3: Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro will be returned to prison following a series of medical operations after the Supreme Court rejected a request by his lawyers for him to serve his sentence under house arrest.
The court, in a ruling published on Thursday, said the right-wing former president must be transferred back to his cell at a federal police headquarters in Brasília once he is discharged from hospital. The 70-year-old recently underwent double hernia surgery and operation to treat chronic hiccups. Bolsonaro has had numerous surgeries in recent years following a stabbing during the 2018 election campaign that severely injured him.
Bolsonaro, who served as president from 2019 to 2022, has been imprisoned since late November and is serving a sentence of more than 27 years. (DPA)
