Billionaire Musk built the world's largest supercomputer to develop AI

May 26, 2024

Washington [US], May 26: Billionaire Elon Musk has just announced plans to build a supercomputer, when he is one of the few investors with abundant capital to compete with OpenAI, Google or Meta in artificial intelligence (AI).
On May 26, The Information page reported that billionaire Elon Musk has just announced a plan to build a supercomputer, dubbed the "super computing factory", to support the development of his artificial intelligence company xAI.
Mr. Musk wants the supercomputer with a combination of 100,000 Nvidia chips to be operational around September 2025 and "will be personally responsible for delivering it on time".
The supercomputer is expected to be at least four times larger than today's largest GPU (graphics processing unit) clusters such as those used by Meta to train artificial intelligence models ( AI), billionaire Musk spoke in a recent meeting with investors.
Since it exploded in 2022, generative AI tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT have become a field of fierce competition between tech giants Microsoft and Google, as well as Meta and startups like Anthropic and Stability AI.
Mr. Musk is one of the few investors in the world with abundant capital to compete with OpenAI, Google or Meta in AI.
xAI is developing the Grok chatbot that can access in real time the X social media platform also owned by billionaire Musk.
The billionaire co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but left in 2018, later sharing that he was uncomfortable with the profit-oriented policy the company was implementing under the management of CEO Sam Altman.
He filed a lawsuit in March, accusing the company of violating its original nonprofit mission of making AI research available to all. OpenAI argued that Mr. Musk's lawsuit, as well as his support of open source development, was nothing more than a bitter incident after leaving the company.
