Barshim jumps to gold at Asian Jumps C'ships in Chongqing

May 20, 2026

Doha [Qatar], May 20: Qatar's Olympic and world champion Mutaz Essa Barshim claimed his first high jump gold at the international stage after returning from injury on Tuesday as he cleared 2.23m at the 1st Asian Jumps Championships in Chongqing, China. Barshim has an impressive history of dominance in China, having previously secured gold at the Asian Games in Hangzhou and multiple Diamond League victories in Shanghai. A few days ago, Barshim had shared gold with Oman's Fatih Abdulghafour Beit Jaaboub at the 4th GCC Games - Doha 2026 after both athletes cleared 2.16m, recreating the spirit of sportsmanship just like at the Tokyo Olympics when Barshim had famously shared Olympic gold with Italy's Gianmarco Tamberi.
