Bangladesh Army announces post-general election return to barracks

Nov 06, 2025

Dhaka [Bangladesh], November 6: The Bangladesh Army said Wednesday that it will go back to its barracks after the country's 13th general election slated for early next year.
Lieutenant General Md Mainur Rahman, general officer commanding of the Army Training and Doctrine Command at Army Headquarters, made the announcement during a news conference in Dhaka on Wednesday, saying that "The army will go back to its barracks after the election is over."
He expressed the hope that the election would make the country more stable and that the overall public safety would improve.
The general explained that the army has been doing duties outside its bases for the last 15 months.
He said that the army personnel are getting ready to help the government hold the election peacefully.
Bangladesh's Election Commission had earlier announced it will deploy up to 100,000 army personnel to provide security for the country's general elections.
Bangladeshi interim government's Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus announced earlier this year to organize the general election in February 2026 for the first time since a mass uprising toppled former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina last year.
