Austrian school shooter deemed mentally unfit for military service

Jun 13, 2025

Vienna [Austria], June 13: The gunman who killed 10 people and took his own life in an Austrian school shooting this week was found to be mentally unfit for military service in 2021, a spokesman for the Austrian Armed Forces said on Thursday.
Michael Bauer confirmed this in a post on X, saying the Austrian armed forces are not permitted to pass on information from medical examinations to third parties.
On Tuesday, a 21-year-old man opened fire at his former school using a pistol and a shotgun. He shot and killed nine teenagers aged between 14 and 17, as well as a teacher, before dying by suicide.
According to the police, the man had held a gun licence since earlier this year. To obtain the licence - required to purchase a pistol - the man had to pass a psychological test, which police confirmed he did. (DPA)
