At least 28 people killed as illegal gold mine collapses in Angola

Dakar [Senegal], May 25: At least 28 people died when an illegally operated gold mine in Angola collapsed, police said on Saturday. The men, aged between 18 and 40, were buried in a landslide in Bengo province, north-east of the capital Luanda, according to a statement from the police in the south-western African country. The accident reportedly occurred in the village of Canacassala, around 60 kilometres outside Luanda.
The victims had been illegally mining for gold there when the mine collapsed. The report added that 13 members of the same family were among the dead. Rescue workers continued the search for any further victims or survivors.
According to the provincial government, this is the first known fatal accident linked to illegal gold mining in the region. (dpa)
