Afghanistan to join UN climate talks for first time under Taliban

Nov 11, 2024

Kabul [Afghanistan], November 11: Afghanistan will participate in the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, the country's National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA) announced on Sunday.
This marks a significant development for Afghanistan, as it will be the first time an Afghan delegation has been invited to a COP summit since the Taliban's return to power in August 2021.
The NEPA added that the Afghan delegation will advocate for increased international cooperation in addressing climate change and seek access to financial mechanisms to support the country's efforts in mitigating and adapting to climate change.
Despite being one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change, while making minimal contributions to global greenhouse gas emissions, Afghanistan had been excluded from international climate discussions in recent years.
According to experts, the country faces severe climate-related challenges, including devastating droughts, deadly floods and desertification, leading to widespread displacement.
The conference, which will take place from November 11 to 22, will bring together world leaders, climate experts and activists to discuss and address pressing climate issues.
