3.6-magnitude tremor hits same site as 1906 San Francisco quake

Jan 11, 2025

San Francisco [California], January 11: U.S. San Francisco was jolted by a 3.6-magnitude earthquake Friday morning at the same location as the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.
The quake occurred at a depth of 7.9 kilometers. The epicenters of this earthquake and a 3.0-magnitude aftershock were detected offshore, about 5 kilometers northwest of the San Francisco Zoo, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
USGS data suggests they may have gone off at the precise coordinates of the 7.9-magnitude earthquake in 1906, which set off fires that destroyed the city.
A San Francisco State University spokesperson said officials checked around the campus and did not find any signs of damage from Friday morning's quake.
San Francisco Zoo officials said the facility did not sustain any damage from the earthquakes. The zoo will stay open Friday.
The new mayor of San Francisco Daniel Lurie said in a statement that he "ordered city government into action immediately this morning, and our first responders have been out across the city ensuring the safety of our residents."
"I want to assure everyone in San Francisco: We are prepared for these events... And as our hearts are with those across the state and the country dealing with natural disasters right now, we will always make sure San Francisco is ready," he said.
The San Francisco Department of Emergency Management said on social media that Friday's quake was "a reminder" to prepare emergency supplies and to make plans in the event of a large, destructive earthquake.
