Migrant vehicles collide in Greece, 5 dead

Apr 16, 2023

Athens [Greece], April 16:At least five people were killed in Greece on Saturday in a head-on collision between an SUV full of migrants and a car, state radio reported, citing the police. Another six people were seriously injured, and in critical condition, the report said. The vehicle carrying the migrants was from the Turkish-Greek border region to western Greece.
Under unexplained circumstances, it ended up in the opposite lane, colliding with a car carrying one passenger. Smuggling gangs usually use inexperienced underage drivers to bring refugees from the border region into the Greek interior. If arrested, minors can expect lighter sentences.
There was no immediate information as to who was driving the van, how old they were, or the nationalities or ages of the victims. After crossing the border, some migrants try to reach Italy or Central Europe with the help of smugglers without registering as asylum seekers in Greece. The smuggling gangs collect $2,220 per person for such journeys. (dpa)
