Mexican senate condemns U.S. blockade of Cuba

Nov 05, 2022

Mexico City [Mexico], November 5: Mexico's Senate has condemned the United States' financial and commercial blockade against Cuba, Senator Citlalli Hernandez Mora said Friday.
The senate also denounced Washington's designation of Cuba as a sponsor of international terrorism as well as the Title III of the Helms-Burton Act, a provision of a federal law passed by the United States in 1996 to step up its embargo against Cuba.
The move came a day after the UN General Assembly (UNGA) voted near unanimously for the 30th time in a row in favor of a resolution calling for an end to the blockade.
Mexico's Senate decided to "respectfully exhort (the United States) to take into account the sentiment expressed by the overwhelming majority" of nations, said the senator.
In a speech, Mexico's permanent representative to the United Nations, Juan Ramon de la Fuente, said the continuous disregard for these UNGA resolutions by a permanent member of the Security Council was "simply unacceptable, in light of international laws and the constitutional provisions of Mexico's foreign policy."
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Thursday also voiced his condemnation of the blockade, calling on the United States to lift the sanctions and promote fraternal international relations.
