Malaysia's IPI rises 12.5 pct in July

Kuala Lumpur [Malaysia], September 10: The Industrial Production Index (IPI) in Malaysia increased 12.5 percent in July year on year, official data showed Friday.
The expansion of the IPI was driven by the manufacturing, electricity and mining sectors, with the growth of 14.9 percent, 13.2 percent and 3.2 percent respectively, the Department of Statistics Malaysia said in a statement.
The main sub sectors contributing to the growth in the manufacturing sector in July were transport equipment and other manufactured products (73.6 percent), electrical and electronics products (17.3 percent) and non-metallic mineral products, basic metal and fabricated metal products (23.9 percent).
Simultaneously, domestic-oriented and export-oriented industries recorded a growth of 30.9 percent and 9.5 percent respectively.
The growth for the mining sector was spearheaded by the increase of 12.6 percent in the natural gas index.
Meanwhile, the crude oil and condensate index declined 8.6 percent.
For the period of January to July, the IPI recorded an expansion of 6.6 percent as compared to the same period of the previous year.
The growth was supported by the manufacturing index (8.8 percent) and the electricity index (6.1 percent).
Meanwhile, the mining index shrank 0.8 percent.
