Aug 15, 2023

Moscow [Russia], August 15: A fire at a gas station in the southern Russian region of Dagestan killed 12 people including two children, Russian officials said.
The fire started at an auto repair shop on the roadside of a highway in Dagestani capital Makhachkala on Monday night and caused blasts spreading to a nearby gas station, officials said.
Footage posted online showed a one-storey building ablaze, Reuters TV reported.
"It's like a war here," a witness said.
The number of injuries rose to over 60 people, Dagestani Governor Sergei Melikov said in a video statement early on Tuesday.
Thirteen of the wounded are children, Interfax said citing the Dagestani health ministry.
It took fire fighters more than three and a half hours to put out the fire that spread into an area of 600 square meters (715 square yards), TASS reported, citing a statement from the Russian emergency service.

A 2,124-Year Insurance Policy Triggers RBI Action, and the Launch of NYVO

New Delhi [India], February 11: A nationalised bank in Maharashtra sold a life insurance policy to a 90-year-old man. The annual premium was ₹2 lakh. The maturity date of the policy was the year 2124. This was not a hypothetical case or an isolated error, it happened. The Reserve Bank of India has since taken note. In its February 2026 policy statement, the RBI proposed comprehensive guidelines to curb mis-selling by banks, including mandatory suitability assessments and stronger accountability for staff. The issue has grown too large to ignore. But regulation alone will not fix it. What families truly need is a fundamentally different kind of advisor. This type of mis-selling stories led to the launch of NYVO.
