Court in Brazil provisionally rejects former president Bolsonaro's appeal

Nov 09, 2025

Rio de Janeiro [Brazil], November 9: Brazil's Supreme Court has provisionally rejected former president Jair Bolsonaro's appeal against his conviction for an attempted coup.
All four judges voted against the appeal, confirming the prison sentence of more than 27 years for an attempted coup following his 2022 election defeat, news portal G1 reported, citing the court. However, the hearing continues until Friday next week and will only then be considered closed. In theory, the judges may change their position until then.
Bolsonaro's defence team can also file another appeal, but its success is considered unlikely. Only when all avenues of appeal have been exhausted can the former head of state be imprisoned.
