China uses DeepSeek's AI model to design advanced fighter jets

Beijing [China], May 4: According to the Shenyang Aircraft Research Institute, DeepSeek's artificial intelligence (AI) technology has provided 'new ideas and approaches'.
The South China Morning Post on May 3 quoted a leading aviation expert as saying that the DeepSeek application platform is being used to support the research and development of China's most advanced fighter jets.
Chief designer Wang Yongqing at the Shenyang Aircraft Design Institute shared that his team started this platform to develop new technology for fighter jets.
They also conduct in-depth research on the potential applications of large language models, the technology behind artificial intelligence ( AI ) models such as ChatGPT and DeepSeek, in analyzing and solving complex problems based on real-world needs.
"This technology has shown promising application potential, providing new ideas and methods for future aerospace research and development," said Mr. Wang.
The 60-year-old designer has worked for nearly four decades at the Shenyang Aircraft Design Institute, a subsidiary of the Aviation Industry Corporation of China.
The institute has helped design a number of fighter jets for the military, including advanced multirole fighters such as the navy's J-15 and the J-35 stealth fighter produced by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation.
Artificial intelligence is also being used to free researchers from tedious evaluation tasks so they can focus on more important work, Mr. Wang said.
He also said that work on new variants of the J-35 with multi-role and dual-capability air-sea variants is "progressing steadily according to plan."
Meanwhile, China appears to be stepping up testing of its sixth-generation stealth fighters, referred to informally as the J-36 and J-50.
